Mapping Polarisation: Four Ethnographic Cases from West Bengal

Religious polarisation is on the rise in India especially after the Bharatiya Janata Party led National Democratic Alliance assumed power of the center in 2014. West Bengal with instances of numerous riots during the partition of the country has a history of peasant uprise followed by party-mediate public transactions for more than three decades. With party becoming the major mediating mechanism the state presents a picture of being relatively immune to riots and primordial identity issues. However, of late, there has been a significant rise in the number of riots and identity polarisation. We have studied four major cases of religious polarisation and riots since 2015 to reflect on how identity issues are propagated through a mix of invented traditions, hoax and use of dubious means like employing goons and in what ways riots pay electoral dividends to the political parties.

Manufacturing Polarisation in Contemporary India: The Case of Identity Politics in Post-Left Bengal

This article explores ethnographically the manufacturing of religious polarisation and violence in West Bengal, India. Since 2014, India has experienced a rise in religion-based identity conflict. Although West Bengal experienced riots during the partition of India, it remained unaffected during the subsequent three decades of Left rule. More recently, however, secular democratic forces have been marginalised and riot-like conflicts have emerged. We argue that identity consolidation in West Bengal is part of an increasing trend of religious polarisation in the country.

Contemporary Bengal has seen several strategic attempts to convert its multicultural society to a monolithic one. The century’s old tendencies to attack Bengali folk singers the Baul-Fakirs in the name of societal chastity have now become even more perilous. Political religion has become a structural machinery which by using a variety of mechanisms of conflict and compromise targets the localized religious expressions, ‘destroys’ and constructs the monolith. Incidents in Rejinagar, Hulaspur and in some other places in Murshidabad district of West Bengal provide us chronicles of torture.

Pathalgadi Movement: Among the Protesting Voices

Documenting a popular movement often drags you into the movement practices and even if one doesn’t want, the nature of movement makes it impossible for the researcher to remain impartial. However, if remaining impartial means remaining reactionless and numb, I do not want to assume that objective neutrality. Whenever I have studied the politics of popular movements in remote villages where the most marginal sections of society are the participants, I have learned a lot from them. Somehow, wittingly or unwittingly, I have, from researcher, become a participant in these movements; from Nandigram, and Lalgarh in West Bengal, Dhinkia-Nuagaon in Odisha, Godda in Jharkhand to Khunti. কথোপকথন দুইজনের। একজন প্রাজ্ঞ অর্থনীতিবিদ। জনসাধারণের স্বার্থে অর্থনীতির নীতি প্রণীত হোক এই ভাবনার স্পষ্টবক্তা। অন্যজন মনোসমাজকর্মী। মনের ভালো থাকা এবং আমাদের চারপাশকে ভালো রাখার প্রচেষ্টার নিত্যসঙ্গী। দুইজনই দার্শনিক, দুইজনই কর্মী। শুভেন্দু দাশগুপ্ত এবং মোহিত রণদীপ। আজকের কথোপকথনের বিষয় অতিমারির এই সময়ে সমাজ, সমাজমন ও অর্থনীতির বিপন্নতা। এই সময়ের বিপন্নতা। মানবজীবনের বিপন্নতা। প্রত্যাশা থেকে হতাশার দূরত্ব ক্রমে কমে আসছে। সাধ থেকে অবসাদের দূরত্বও। কিন্তু আশার আলো কি কোথাও নেই? ‘কথোপকথন’-এ এসেছে সেই কাশ্মীরি চিকিৎসকের কথা যিনি পিপিই খুলে কোভিড আক্রান্ত শ্বাসকষ্ট হওয়া রোগীকে মুখে মুখ দিয়ে শ্বাসপ্রশ্বাস সচল রাখতে চেষ্টা করেছিলেন। এসেছে 'চুঁচুড়া আরোগ্য', শ্রীরামপুর এ পি ডি আর সহ বিভিন্ন সংগঠনের কথা , যাঁরা এই সময়ে নানাভাবে সাহায্য করেছেন আক্রান্ত মানুষকে। এসেছে শাসকের সামনে নতজানু বিভিন্ন সাংবিধানিক প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলির কথাও। সরকারি তথ্যেই জানা যাচ্ছে, এক কোটি ভারতবাসী কাজ খুইয়ে, আশ্রয় হারিয়ে নেমেছেন পথে, যাদের আমরা পরিযায়ী শ্রমিক বলেছি। এসেছে তাঁদের কথা।

FACT-FINDING REPORT ON HALDWANI VIOLENCE OF FEBRUARY 8, 2024 AND ITS AFTERMATH

Violent incident occurred on 8.02.2024 in Banbhulpura, Haldwani. It was not a sudden incident. It was the outcome of a steady rise in communal tempers in the state of Uttarakhand over recent years. The state government led by the Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami and radical right wing citizen groups have together contributed to the spread of a highly polarizing narrative with many disturbing elements. One strand of this discourse is about recreating Uttarakhand as the Holy Land of Hindus which would have no place for other religious minorities. Other strands of this divisive discourse include unsupported extravagant claims of a series of Jihads allegedly waged by the Muslim population of the state, including Love Jihad, Land Jihad, Vyapar Jihad, and Mazaar Jihad.
