Inauguration of Ram Temple in Ayodhya was against Constitution of India and against ‘Idea of India’

A letter to the Prime Minster of India: Inauguration of Ram Temple and Pran Pratistha (consecration) in Ayodhya on 22 January, 2024 violates the preamble and objectives of the Constitution of India, hurts the 'Idea of India'.

Respected Prime Minster

We, the people of India constituted ourselves as a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic to conduct our affairs within the four corners of our Constitution, its goals and values. Preamble of our Constitution indicates that the source of authority of the Constitution lies with the people of India. The Constitution is the supreme law and it helps to maintain integrity in the society and to promote harmony among the citizens to build a great nation.

As a part of the constitution, preamble can be amended under Article 368 of the Constitution, but the basic structure of the preamble cannot be amended. This basic structure of the preamble as a whole resonates of the fact that our Constitution is based on the ideal of our freedom struggle. Our struggle against British imperialism from Great Rebellion (1857) to War of INA (Azad Hind Fauz) and millennial history and culture of coexistence make and strengthen the ‘idea of India’. Non-Cooperation movement, Civil Disobedience Movement, Khilafat Movement promoted the ideals like equality, justice and fraternity. 

However, the inauguration of Ram Temple and Pran Pratistha (consecration) in Ayodhya on 22 January, 2024 by you violates the Preamble and objectives of the Constitution of India. The main objective of our constitution is to promote harmony throughout the nation. Your speech to the nation from the enclave of said temple, "Hamare Ram Aa Gaye Hain. After centuries of waiting, our Ram has arrived." Overwhelmed by the significance of the occasion, you shared, "My throat is choked, my body is still shaking, and my mind is still absorbed in the moment."

Same thing was happened to the Muslims of India, their throats were choked by fear, their mind was absorbed by sock when Babri Mosque was demolished on 6th December, 1992, demolished by Karsevaks, whom you honored as ‘freedom fighter’ after inauguration. Same traumatic situation repeats again in the minority’s area on 22 January, 2024 when you entered in the Airport of Ayodhya.

Your speech, your act, especially being the Prime Minister to a democratic and secular nation, not only violates our Constitutional ideals but also hurts the ‘Idea of India’. Prime Minster is a constitutional post, and as a Prime Minister you should play an unbiased role especially on sensitive issues like Ayodhya. Babri Mosque- Ram Birthplace controversy is not only sensitive but also is one of the causes of numerous riots in India and also in South Asia. Minorities of both sides of the borders were victimized for this controversy for the last three decades.

We, as a field research group working on Conflict and Peace study strongly disapprove your total role in inauguration of Ram temple episode and as a whole ‘Babri Mosque- Ram Birthplace’ controversy. We think your act in this affair in against constitution of India, against humanity, against our beloved country, India.
