Rally to celebrate World Environment Day, Kolkata, 5 June, 2022
World Environment Day occurs on 5th June every year. It is the United Nation's principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. This year with ‘Environment Rights Movement’, a platform of different environment and rights movement of West Bengal, India; we took part in a rally in Kolkata (from Deshbandhu Park, Shyambazar to Bagbazar Bata via Bagbazar Ganga ghat) on 5 June, 2022. Colourful placards, slogans, songs and street drama were performed. Leaflets were distributed. A large number of students and youths came together to raise demands on West Bengal based issues of environmental rights. Our demands-
1. Immediate Cancellation of Deucha project of Birbhum district and Tilaboni project of Purulia district.
2. No eviction of forest-residents by destroying forest. Stop land grabbing of tribes.
3. Stop killing of trees and destruction of wetlands.
4. Break down all illegal construction and Restore Ponds.
5. Stop conversion of Churial Canal, Adi Ganga-Talinala, drainage system of Kolkata to Box drain.
6. Restore Jalangi River, Atrayee River, Tapan Dighi, Bhandardaha, Bhaba Dighi and all rivers, lakes, water reservoirs of West Bengal.
7. Control use of plastic immediately. Use of poly bags must be stopped.
*It is noted that activists of the Peace Centre also participated in this rally.
